Q.When poverty is transmitted to our generation it becomes a culture. Elucidate.[Sec-A/8M/125W/2022]

Ans). The Culture of Poverty is defined as people in poverty developing certain habits that cause their families to remain in poverty over generations. Oscar Lewis explains how people develop a stagnant mindset of values and culture that they remain poor and this poverty will pass it down from generation to generation. Ex.-Nigeria

For example, despite low income, younger citizens often question their parents' choices to have such large families. In many poor families mothers and grandmothers gave birth several times, despite a lack of affordability.

Pervasive feelings of helplessness, dependency, marginality, and powerlessness characterize this culture. We can break this culture by improving health, educating them and maintaining the minimum standard of living by launching various government schemes like MNREGA, Pradhan Mantri Gramoday Yojana etc. Sustainable practices in Iceland can be adopted to achieve sustainable development goals to alleviate poverty.
