Cyclones in the Arabian Sea

Q. Analyse the reasons for the increasing frequency of cyclones in the Arabian Sea. How is climate change impacting tropical cyclones?

Ans. Tropical cyclones are among the strongest and most destructive weather events. These cyclones emerged over warm seas and winds of up to 90 miles per hour [119 km/hr] with heavy rainfall.

Climate change is affecting India's east and west coast patterns by 2050[1]. The frequency of storms changes significantly in the Arabian Sea compared to the Bay of Bengal two decades ago.

Comparison between cyclones frequency in Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal -

Source: Lok Sabha, IMD [2], Money control [3]

  • Increase in the number of cyclones by 52% and 150% in very severe cyclones in the Arabian Sea
  • The number of cyclones in the Bay of Bengal has declined by 8% between 1982 and 2019. [4]

Causes of frequent storms rising in the Arabian Sea -

  • A rise in temperature of 1.2–1.4 ° C results in fluctuating temperatures, heavy rainfall, and severe storms enabling the Arabian Sea to provide additional storm energy.[5]
  • For cyclones, the Arabian Sea conduce wind shear. For example, high easterly winds caused Cyclone Ockhi depression.
  • The massive emergence of El Nino Modoki created unusual conditions for cyclogenesis in the Bay of Bengal.

Role of climate change in terms of increasing frequency-

In the decades to come, climate change will rise in all regions. At 1.5 ° C with global warming, there will be rising temperatures, long warmer seasons, and cooler colder seasons. At 2 ° C of global warming, high temperatures can reach significant agricultural and health tolerance limits.

But climate change is bringing about various changes in different regions which will increase the temperature.

Figure 2. Impacts of Climate Change

Stability in Climate and Global warming can be achieved by-

  • Zero CO2 emissions.
  • Reducing air pollution and greenhouse gases such as methane can benefit health and air.
  • Reducing environmental effects is due to anthropological activities related to global warming and water temperature.

Government programs for Cyclones are-

  • INSAT 3D satellite launch with pre-storm information.
  • National Cyclone Risk Mitigation Project (NCRMP) develops warning, tracking, and cyclones forecast systems in India.
  • Integrated Coastal Zone Management Project (ICZMP) to develop national capacity to implement comprehensive coastal management in India.

So taking these steps with the concerted efforts of the international communities with governments will reduce global warming which will reduce climate change and further prevents cyclones and other natural disasters.
